No one disputes that there is in nature a law of positive attraction, by which people hope to gain many things, including money, by doing things and saying things that they hope will invoke its power.

Why is it important for those outside of a business to view a forecast? The potential success of the business will be more easily seen to potential investors once they are able to see a fore cast of the intended budget vs. the expected income. Since large amounts of real money are being risked, and the investors want a profitable business, forward looking forecasts can be crucial. In order for a successful game plan to be determined the information being used must be accurate and other environmental conditions must be allowed to impact the overall results of the forecast if it is to be dynamic.

Forecasts provide a realistic analysis of the company’s expectations and they give insight as to how healthy an intended business model really is. These forecasts can not only help refine a business plan, but they can identify capital needs and any possible problems with excess spending. When the organization is able to determine a cash flow forecast they will then be able to then look at the anticipated earnings clearly. Scenario planning involves preparing for different possible outcomes as well as any potential changes in the environmental conditions. By going this route we can learn more about potential strategies to take. This planning method looks at different possibilities and compares them on a linear basis, based on what is learned people can take a path that is enabled by more educated research. This is highly desired as it will provide more opportunity to deal quickly with any potential surprises. It also allows more angles to view the challenge at hand, whether it’s a marketing campaign, a new start up business or the hiring of new people.

As the scenarios are being analyzed it’s often desirable to monitor potential negative scenarios as well as the positive scenarios. For this plan to truly be of use one most look at both sides, the negative and the positive. For example, if a company wants to export cars to an African country they may order a forecast to be produced to see the demand and growth of that potential market. This forecast would then be shown to potential investors who would decide if they wanted to put up the money to purchase the automobiles. The forecast would show that there was a percentage of the intended market place who could afford the cars. The market is growing and things seem to be looking good in that area. The investors may go ahead and invest based on this information. However if multiple scenarios were illustrated the investors would see that the potential for disaster is looming. In this country there is a new trade law in the works, this trade law will affect all imports. This new law may be ready to begin taxing a 40% import tax. If the company and its backers invest in the distribution infrastructure of this African country, they begin marketing and hiring the workers for the new market. Then imagine what kind of problems they would have once they export the cars and the trade law is passed. The people in this African country who barely were able to buy the cars previously now would be looking at the cars yet not be able to make a purchase due to the 40% tax that has been added on. This would be one of the scenarios to be analyzed in a professionally assembled plan that would view multiple scenarios. This is a prime example of how the multiple scenario analysis offers a way to uncover any problems.

The same principles that are used in the business world can be applied in our personal lives. There are countless ways in which we need to plan our futures. For example say you have recently been hired for a new job and you need to move across the country. You can make a forecast about how much money you will need to relocate to the new city. The plan is set, after all the research has been prepared, the moving expenses noted, the costs to pay for the new apartment, even the packing materials are factored in to the total estimate. Of course there is no perfect scenario as we don’t know what to expect. But if we make a multifaceted estimate we can cover more possible avenues of risk, thus protecting ourselves from problems and inconvenience. However unless we factor in the potential scenario of things that would occur on a cross country trip we will be unprepared for the journey. If we prepare for the scenario of having a flat tire and hitting a snow storm, if the money and time is accounted for then we will have a greater chance of making it safely and in time for the new job. These are examples of how you can see multiple scenario plans at work in the business world and in our personal lives, to help us mange the normal living challenges we all face everyday.

You do not know the number of people who are willing to pay anyone who can help them arrange their homes and offices so that they know where to get any stuff they require.

And still at the home front you may want to consider the niche of healthy foods that have become the fad today. There many busy folk who know they need to eat healthy and they do not know where and how. Several people have turned their little kitchen skills into a money minting idea simply preparing and delivering whole meals to some lazy fold out there who have a phobia for their kitchens, or simply do not know what to do to turn their ideas into healthy meals. It is simply time to transform your ideas into money before someone else beats you at the game.

For any entrepreneur who is serious about making money in this day and age, the Internet is a powerful, and some would argue indispensable, tool. A web presence enables you to reach customers wherever you want – and for companies with a mail order aspect this has been proven to drive orders up by allowing them to sell far and wide. In order to increase your web presence, there are many tools available. Some of these tools are more effective than others, but one which has proven to be immensely popular is Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short. SEO has become one of the ultimate buzzwords in Internet marketing – and is seen as being immensely desirable for the purposes of increasing presence.

Search engines are seen as being hugely important in increasing your web presence. Many people who are looking for something specific will, without even thinking, turn to the search engines, and most usually Google. By entering their required search term, they will turn up relevant results in the search engine and pick from the list that they see. Because people tend to read a page from top to bottom, having the result which ranks first in Google for a specific search term is considered very lucrative. Search Engine Optimization works by making a web page more “attractive” to the robots which search the Internet for relevant results. It does this by reading the keywords which people are searching for and judging by their volume on the page how apposite the site is for the searcher.

So far, so good, then. To create a page that will bring in the attention of someone who is looking for, say, tickets for a Justin Timberlake concert, the SEO user will make as many references as possible in the text of their web page to “justin timberlake tickets”, “justin timberlake concert”, “justin timberlake concert tickets”, and a range of other phrases which can include the venues at which Justin will be appearing, as well as eyecatching words like “cheap”, “cut price”, “front row” and so forth. Then when the potential customer searches for “cheap justin timberlake tickets Chicago” or a similar search term, the site with the most relevant references will appear high in the Google search results.

So what is the drawback to SEO, if it is bringing in traffic? The answer is that people know SEO works, and can occasionally be very indiscriminate in their use of search terms. Look at the two sentences that follow:

“I have found a fail-safe way to get cheap front row tickets for Justin Timberlake in Chicago – read on for more info!”

“Cheap Justin Timberlake tickets Chicago I have found Justin Timberlake concert tickets front row – CLICK HERE!!!”

The first sentence holds more promise for the questing Timberlake fan, as it reads like something a sentient person might write. The latter is stuffed with search terms and reads like gibberish – but at least initially will get into the search engines at a higher level due to its SEO volume. More and more people, conscious of the power of SEO, are using nothing but optimization to drive traffic, and it is becoming problematic for the person looking to find relevant information. Search engines are, however, developing to forestall this problem – but it is not, as yet, an exact science, and poor SEO is still slipping through the net.

Don’t Be An Ambulance Chaser

There is no doubt that although the majority of entrepreneurs are simply individuals who spot a gap in the market where it exists, and use their business sense to make it work for them, there are others who see an opportunity for profit everywhere, and even take an approach which morally compromises them. It is important for an entrepreneur who wishes to be taken seriously that they do not get a reputation for the latter. It may make short-term business sense to be ready to make money where others would feel morally compromised, but in the long term fewer people will want to do business with someone who has a reputation for being morally blind.

In cases of natural disaster, a high-profile death, national emergency or other such events, some people will see the chance to make money and care little about how their actions will be interpreted. In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11^th, 2001, almost the entire world was united in revulsion about the events and in sympathy for the victims and their families, as well as being strident in their insistence that such a thing should never happen again. It was also the case, however, that a few individuals saw the opportunity to play on people’s fears by spotting a sales opportunity – hiking up prices on essential living items in the knowledge that people would be reluctant to leave their homes, selling security devices which would be useless in the event of another attack to play on the very real desire for safety, and so forth.

It is desirable for an entrepreneur to be opportunistic. Seeing the chance to make money where it exists is how an entrepreneur makes a living. While there is a lot of moral relativism around – “Someone was going to get rich off this, why not me?” is a favourite defence – it is essential for a businessman to consider the matter of public relations. OK, most people will view the concept of public relations to be something of a pseudo-science. The truth of the matter is that in business, it is important. In most cases, our conscience will restrain us from doing something that the majority of people would find distasteful. It can be tempting to look at someone profiting from a tragedy and think “Well, if that ass can do it, I don’t see why I should suffer because of my conscience.” But there are very good reasons not to give in to that thinking.

When someone makes a living off preying on the fears and the sorrows of individuals or groups, they gain a reputation as an “ambulance chaser” – from the branch of law known as “personal injury”, where people are encouraged to find someone culpable for an accident and sue them regardless of genuine responsibility. Ambulance chasers are not widely respected and will find that anyone who has a genuine choice as to whom they do business with will avoid them like the plague. It may be a way of making short-term cash, but in the long run it is not really a sound business approach.

There is often an impression that the world of entrepreneurship is somewhat hyper-competitive, with many people under the impression that if you can’t do it all on your own than you might as well forget it. There is a fairly negative impression of sharing, of accepting or looking for help, and once the game is over and the money is counted, the people with the most smug smiles on their face are the ones who are able to say they did it all on their own. Some credit has to go to these people, undoubtedly, because they have done a fine job to get so far without any input from someone else. But would it be such a bad thing to enlist help on occasion? Sometimes a partnership is, after all, more than the sum of its parts.

Whatever you call it – outsourcing, joint venture, partnership or anything else – there are times when doing it all on your own becomes counter-productive. Maybe it is true that no-one knows your business better than you do, but sometimes you will need to look beyond the world in which you are comfortable and allow someone else to take a look at things. Working together with them in an official capacity could be the smartest decision you make – and the best for you. Some people avoid joint partnerships because they feel that they will have to share more than they would like. But what if a half-share in something big is better than a hundred per cent of something smaller? It does not have to be about doing it all on your own. Sometimes the partnership is the soundest business decision and the best for your bottom line.

It is best to accept early on in your business career that you are not going to be a master of all trades, because no-one is. There are gaps in everyone’s knowledge, holes in everyone’s experience. This is not an admission of weakness. It is strategic realism. If you accept that you are not an expert on everything, and enlist someone who is an expert in a field that can help you, you will benefit from their expertise and you will see better results for it. Indeed through working with someone else you can find yourself absorbing knowledge that could help you in many other ways somewhere down the line.

It may be that someone else speaks another language which will help with an overseas market, or that someone has an innate knowledge of a specific way of doing a job – something that your customers have requested several times in the past. The other person may have an ingrained knowledge of the geography of an area you want to crack, but whatever it is, the important thing for you as an entrepreneur is that it can aid you in your dealings and take you up a level. Spurning the chance to work with someone else, someone with experience and intelligence, is simply cutting off your nose to spite your face.
