LifeMiles Promotion Continues

LifeMiles Promotion Continues

LifeMiles, the frequent flyer program of Avianca Airlines, is currently running a promotion until September 30, 2015 to buy LifeMiles at a discounted rate. LifeMiles can also be used on Star Alliance airlines, as Avianca is a Star Alliance member.

The miles purchase starts at 1000 at a 50 percent bonus and then goes up in stages by 50, 75, 100, and 135 percent. During this promotion you can purchase up to 360,000 miles per year. You need to have an existing account to catch this offer. You cannot just open an account and buy promotional miles. As Avianca run promotions more than once every year, if you miss this time you can open an account now to buy it next time.

Do not just buy miles because they are on sale. Unlike Aeroplan, LifeMiles let you fly on all 27 Star Alliance partners without any fuel surcharges. Do your math and see if buying miles makes sense in your currency.

For example, a round-trip from Canada to Europe requires 60,000 LifeMiles in economy class and 126,000 LifeMiles in business class. To get approximately 60,000 miles, you need to buy 29,000 miles at $957 US ($1300 Canadian). To buy 126,000 miles, you will have to buy approximately 60,000 miles at $2000 US ($2650 Canadian). I searched on Expedia for November going to London from Toronto and the average fare comes to about $750 to $1000 Canadian in economy class and $2,000 to $4,000 Canadian in business class. So there is no good deal to buy LifeMiles on promotion flying from Toronto to London. But for other cities in Europe, you might get a deal paying less with LifeMiles than paying in cash.

Do your math (like above) and find out if you get a better deal using miles before buying anything. A point worth mentioning is that I find it difficult to find flights on specific dates using LifeMiles. You have to be very flexible with dates and sometimes it’s even hard to find available flights within 1 to 2 months.

I do buy LifeMiles on promotion and I plan to use them to upgrade my paid economy flights to business class on Star Alliance member flights. I believe this is an easier and efficient way to use LifeMiles, rather than searching for the whole trip in LifeMiles.
